The American Library Association (ALA) always has links and sites to promote library sign-up month, including a link to 52 Ways to Use Your Library Card, which includes ideas like:
- Learn about local candidates for office.
- Pick up voter registration information.
- Check out your favorite graphic novel.
- Pick up a DVD.
- Find out how to navigate the Internet.
- Attend a lecture or workshop.
- Hear a local author reading his/her latest novel.
- Attend preschool story hour with your child.
- Get homework help.
- Look up all kinds of health information.
- Trek to another planet in a Sci-Fi novel.
- Research your term paper.
Would your students know they can do this in the library? It is a great way to get your student out of the classroom for a while. Take the opportunity to show students how they can research and use its resources other than hopping on Google.
Start off with taking a visit to your school's library and have the school librarian and teacher assist with discovering the library resources. Make it an interactive experience such as creating a scavenger hunt, playing a game of Jeopardy (either upon returning to the classroom or in the library), or assign students small classroom projects related to research and working with the school library.
